ABOUT MYTHS OF ANCIENT GIANTS

I found the video boring. I link to it only to provide the basis of the comments.

  1. Something to keep in mind when trying to visualise giant humans: if a man is twice as big in all three dimensions he would weigh 8 times as much (2x2x2 = 8). But the bones necessary to bear this weigh are columns (whose strength is measured in their cross section) and they only increase their cross section by a factor of four (2×2 = 4).

So doubling the proportions of a 6 ft tall man weighing 200 lbs would result in a man weighing 1600 lbs but his leg bones would only support 800 lbs. Some large animals get around this walking on four legs. A notable exception to this is the gorilla. The largest ever recorded weighed about 600 lbs. Although they walk on all fours their arms do most of the work of supporting the extra weight. Their arms have a massive cross section.

The tallest humans ever recorded are the Dinka of the south Sudan and the Watutsi of Rwanda. Adult males over seven ft tall are common. Nature solved the leg bone cross section problem by making the men extremely skinny. BTW, the best film footage of the Watutsi is in the 1950 film King Solomon’s Mines with Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger.

      1. Bunny: Great video!! A masterpiece of ingenuity and engineering!

But, to me, the greater story is the video’s 2,911,291 views and 44,764 comments – in just two days!!

Perhaps there are enough real American men left in America that can save the country.
